CPAFI

The Correctional Professional Assistance Fund of Indiana supports IDOC employees, contract staff, and their families through scholarships, employee assistance programs, and fundraising initiatives. CPAFI operates at the intersection of care, community, and public service, providing critical support beyond the workplace.

The Challenge

Public service work is demanding, emotionally, physically, and financially.
Many correctional professionals and their families face unexpected hardships, educational barriers, and moments of crisis that extend beyond what traditional systems can support.

CPAFI exists to bridge that gap. Ensuring help is accessible, timely, and rooted in dignity.

My Role

As a digital experience and communications partner, I supported CPAFI by strengthening how its mission, programs, and impact are communicated to employees, partners, and the broader community.

My work focused on clarity, accessibility, and trust. Ensuring information was easy to find, understand, and act on.

Responsibilities included:

  • Clarifying and structuring CPAFI’s programs and initiatives

  • Improving content clarity for public-facing and internal audiences

  • Supporting fundraising and awareness efforts through digital storytelling

  • Aligning messaging across platforms to reflect CPAFI’s values and purpose

Approach

Rather than focusing on promotion alone, I approached CPAFI’s digital presence as a service experience, designed to meet people during moments of need, curiosity, or generosity.

Key focus areas included:

  • Human-centered messaging: Writing with empathy and respect for lived experience

  • Accessibility & clarity: Ensuring content is readable, inclusive, and easy to navigate

  • Trust & transparency: Clearly communicating how support works and where funds go

  • Consistency: Aligning tone and language across materials and channels

The goal was to make CPAFI feel approachable, reliable, and genuinely supportive.

Outcomes & Impact

This work helped strengthen CPAFI’s ability to connect with employees and supporters by:

  • Improving clarity around scholarships, assistance programs, and events

  • Supporting increased engagement with fundraising and awareness initiatives

  • Making it easier for employees and families to understand available resources

  • Reinforcing CPAFI’s role as a trusted support system within the IDOC community

More importantly, it ensured the organization’s values were reflected not just in what it does, but in how it communicates.

“My job as a digital experience leader is to question assumptions and dispel “self-evident” truths to steer companies towards a UX-driven culture. My success depends on my ability to make other people successful.”
